Q = Eight People to Emulate

1. Queen Latifah - When I saw Hairspray in theaters, I really looked up to her acting job in this movie! She is an awesome actor and I think it's a very hard thing to do!
2. Quincy Jones - He was an executive producer in a lot of episodes of the Fresh Prince of Bel-air.  That show was awesome!  If I were to be a producer in a TV show, I would hope it to be as good as the Fresh Prince was!
3. Zachary Quinto - I admired his job in 24.  My parents used to watch this show usually right before when I would go to bed.  He seems to have a lot of strength.
4. Queen Elizabeth II -  As a kid I never wanted to be a princess, but as I grew older I kind of wanted to be.  I admire Queen Elizabeth because she's always proper and so many others look up to her.  I hope someone will look up to me like that someday.
5. Patricia Quinn - I watched Rocky Horror Picture Show with my friend last year and I really enjoyed the weirdness and variety of characters.  Mrs. Quinn was Magenta in Rocky Horror and I hope to be as courageous as her to express a weird, different side of me.
6. Mary Quant - I really enjoy drawing, but lately I've enjoyed drawing dresses on characters.  Mrs. Quanti's a British fashion designer.  Her designs were really popular, and if I decide to go in that field I hope I can make something as cool as she did!
7. Anna Quindlen - I love to read!  Mrs. Quindlen works for the New York Times as a political columnist.  I believe she's incredibly smart, and one day I hope my writing will improve and sound as intelligent as hers does.
8. DJ Qualls - I am absolutely obsessed with Breaking Bad.  He was in one episode when Jessie's friend got caught with meth and then went to jail.  I think it'd be cool to appear on some of my favorite TV shows just as DJ did!

TU Tuesday - Culture

Link to poem: http://www.thehypertexts.com/Haiku%20Best%20Masters%20Translation%20.htm

"[T]he country's regulations are flawed, outdated and below global standards." This article is about how Haruki Madarame, an nuclear power safety chief, apologized for the meltdowns at the Fukushima plant that happened because of the tsunami. He admitted that "nuclear safety guidelines that we have issued until now have [consisted of] various flaws."  These flaws had a huge impact on the country. "[The] tsunami knocked out power and cooling systems at the plant, sending its three reactors into meltdowns and causing massive radiation leaks. More than 100,000 people around the plant relocated due to fears of radiation impact on their health."  If Japan had taken the safety precautions then it may not have happened as bad as it did.  "Japanese safety regulators have missed chances to make improvements when such steps were taken in other countries."  This article related to a poem by Yamaguchi Seishi.  It is a haiku that tells about how power goes out.  This poem could be referring to how in WWII when the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima the power went out, or how the earthquake and tsunamis cause mass destruction.  Japan is known for its natural disasters.  It says how technology  "grinds to a halt" and that happened with the bad saftey precautions with Fukushima.  In the poem it says how "[g]rasses wilt" and I believe it connects to the article because the grass does wilt from the nuclear meltdown.  If safety is not improved the power can go out again; such as it did in the past.

Valentine's Day

“Jessie couldn't believe her eyes. Stuffed into her mailbox was the biggest Valentine she had ever seen…”  She pulled it out and read the label. It was from an anonymous.   Jessie looked all around her and opened it up. Inside was a love letter.  It had praised her up and down how she was the love of the person's life.  She had no idea who it could be because she believed no one would ever fall for her hard without saying it in person.  At the bottom of the card there was an address and it had told her to go there at 6 at night.  She stared at the card briefly and then brought it inside with her.  She slowly walked to her door with a smile on her face.
As she got inside she wondered what to do for the next 5 hours.  She went on the computer and melted three hours on tumblr reblogging pictures of cats.  She then decided to get ready by taking a shower and putting on an adorble red dress in honor of Valentines day.  Names of boys that she thought it could be ran through her head and she started brushing her long wavy blonde hair.  She got in her car and went to the address. As she pulled up she noticed it was a resturnat.  She pulled into a parking space and got out, looking around.  She noticed Christmas lights on the building and thought they were cute because they were white and red. As she apporached the door to go inside she noticed that there was a sign with her name on it. The sign told her to turn around.
As she twirled around a man held up a sign.
Would you go out with me again? It read.
She squealed with excitement, blushed and hugged the man.
His camouflage clothes shined bright in the moon light.

Dreams are lined up against the wall

A Wallflower's Choice
Dreams are lined up against the wall
as the wallflower watches the midday sun.
The wall of dreams-
the wall that must be reached not alone.
Waiting for the right chance to jump in.
Just in reach but yet so far away.
The wallflower had to choose-
the sun or the wall of dreams.

The wallflower shakes.
She is covering her face.
She is hiding the frown.
She closes her eyes
and she leaps into the sun.
Dreams aren't meant for a wallflower.

Comic Connection

Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson
This comic relates to my life because I consider myself a kid and I believe you do have to be something when you grow up because we are humans.   We can't grow up and do nothing, or not have a job because then we'd live on the streets and be a bum.  Animals are free to do what they want and therefore don't have to become anything.  My dog, Blake, is a puppy. He is one years old.  In a few years, when he becomes grown up, he will still be a dog.  Not a police officer or a doctor.  I found this comic to be funny because when the tiger replies that he has no room to improvement and that is why a tiger stays a tiger because tigers do not have the ability to think like a human and therefore can't get a job.  The tiger is simply being confident or acting like an adult would tell their child about a life lesson.  Kind of like a white lie.  If I asked my mom why something was and she didn't want to answer she would give a white lie.  For example Santa.  When the boy is sad that he has humans for parents, the tiger replies with that they have good protein. The tiger is saying that his parents are still good and there's an upside to having humans as parents. I love my parents.

Buckle down and push forth.

Two years ago I joined the JV tennis team.  My only experience with tennis was a few lessons in the earlier months, and whatever I remembered from the lessons I took in fourth grade. I really wanted to try out because I'd never done a sport, and tennis seemed interesting.  My mom had told me not to do it- she was afraid I'd get cut from the team.  My annual family trip to Delaware interfered with the tryouts- so until very last minute I couldn't try out.  I still made the team because there was an open spot left; and a few people told me everyone usually makes it. No matter what.
My first year on the JV tennis team was something so new for me.  I didn't understand what it meant to really work.  I was overweight and slow compared to everyone else.  I had to chose between a tight fitting medium or an old large dress, because the company was out of larges in the 'new' style.  I chose a tight fitting medium, but I didn't regret it.  I didn't really give it my all this season because I was new.  New was scary. I didn't understand what I was doing.  After the banquet had passed I decided that I really wanted to do better next season.  Justina had told me she went from exposition to 2nd singles and I thought that was really awesome.  I thought I could do that same thing, or at least get to singles.
Singles was my goal and I buckled down and worked as hard as I could through the following winter, spring and summer.  Right after the banquet I started taking lessons at Sportime with my best friend Sterling.  Still I was clumsy and the one to be the most out of breath.  I was at the bottom of skill at my lessons.  Jed, the instructor, had always called me out on not moving my feet and running and whatnot.  When spring came around, I was improving.  I could beat  a few of the other people in the group.  My shots were still clumsy.  A month followed and a guy named Neal came to help out, since the group was getting bigger.  We were working on serves, and he told me to relax and just hit the ball.  Out of nowhere I slammed the ball into the court.  This was the first time I hit a ball from a serve this hard.  My movement was finally corrected, and I could finally have a powerful serve.  This was the changing point in my tennis carrier.  Serving was the most important part of the game- if you didn't have a serve that would make it in the box, there was no way that you could win.  I practiced and practiced the rest of spring and into summer, taking more lessons with an obnoxious guy named Sam.  He told me his goal was to make me cry, and I kept speaking back to him because he seemed like he was still just a kid.  I didn't have any respect for him, as rude as that is.  I was the best out of the lesson group.  Summer was the season I just played with my friends, my mom, and even my dad.  Anyone who wanted to play I would play.  Finally tryouts for JV tennis came.
Tryouts went well, I was undefeated a lot.  I was extremely happy with my success.  Once the first match came around, I looked at the lineup.  I was placed at number one singles.  My face was priceless.  My hard work had paid off.
